Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Rusty, age 14 The Contender The Contender is a very interesting book about a kid named Alfred Brooks. He’s sixteen years old and lives in Harlem. At first his life sucks with not much to do. He has a few friends his best one’s name is James. But he soon turns on him. He goes to this gym to see what it’s like. And he soon starts training to become a contender. Soon enough he’s in the ring and is pretty good. But the manager wants him to stop because he didn’t have that kill instinct in him. But he shows heart and determination his last fight. He helps his friend James out and get back to normal and then there friends again. “Concrete gloves hammered into his stomach, his sides” this shows how well Lipsyte uses similes in this wonderful book Alfred- he’s a good guy. He is determined to do well. He’s also very helpful. Henry- He is a really nice guy who had leg trouble. He also helps out in the gym. This all happens in Harlem, New York and very bad place with an extremely bad environment. And it’s in the 1960’s He wants to be a boxer. And the moral of the story is to try hard and don’t ever give up. I thought the book was really good. It grabbed my attention. Just about anybody would like this book if you like boxing and fighting. It will grab your attention.
