Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert

The contender by robert lipsyte

A kid named Alfred Brooks he does not live in a very good place to grow up at. So he tries to make something out of himself since he has no parents he has to live with his aunt & uncle. He also doesn’t hang around the right people so it’s harder for him to grow up. He also did not finish school. He gets into boxing and he will hope that it will work out for him, but he has a friend named James and he really needs help but Alfred can’t be practicing, working out, helping James, and try to earn money at work so he needs to decide what to do.

“Don’t worry about that, I got plenty of blood for you.” I think it’s a good quote in the book because it shows that no matter what someone will always be there for you or you might be there for them.

Alfred Brooks is a guy that you would like to have as a friend. He is responsible and will always be there for you. He will never give up on what he wants. He will get his mind on something & he will try to do it as best as possible. You can say that Alfred is a Contender.

The story takes place in a ghetto area in Harlem, N.Y during the year 1960’s.

The part about the book that I like is when the author gave flashbacks during the story. For example he would describe two things & then put it all together and it makes since.

I think the theme of the book is “never give up on something that you want” don’t let someone else bring you down you do what you want.

What amazes me the most about it is how people do what they do now days and back in the days.

I think people who are struggling with life at the moment should read the book also a person who likes boxing they would probably like the book for motivation, because every has something that motivates them.
