Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Tess, age 14 The Contender Alfred is a kid that lives with his aunt he dropped out of school. His best friend James gets in trouble with drugs and Alfred when James says “he don’t have enough blood” Alfred says “I have enough blood for both of us” that means that Alfred is going to help him trough it. Alfred is the main character in this story. He lives in Harlem, New York. He had good descripedion.You could visualize the seen and were the story takes place and what time period it is in. Alfred has a conflict with his life and things that have happened to him but towards the end he changes and is more confident in his self more than before the theme in this story is to never give up and always try your best no matter how hard life gets. This book helps me think about how some times I to am like Alfred and don’t believe in myself it makes me want to follow my dreams and follow what I believe in. I like this book because it is very well explained to me I understand what it is talking about. I would say this book is good for kids ten and up it is very good I hope u enjoy it.
