Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Alisha, age 14 The Contender. Alfred is a boy about the age of sixteen, he dropped out of school his best friend name James gets hooked on drugs. Alfred gets bullied by older guys, his mom and dad both are dead now he lives with his aunt the twins and his other cousin. The main characters is the story is Alfred, a black male, 16, wants to be a boxer he has also won two of his matches lost one and had one that was a draw. Being pond I my sides like a pound of bricks going in to your side. Where this book took place was in Harlem New York around the 1960’s. Some good things the author did in this book was that he gave really good descriptions of the characters actions, and he showed the emotions to make you know who the person was actually feeling. The theme of this story is to never give up in life. My feelings about this book is that I really like this book because, of all the humor that was involved in the story made it seem like you could actually feel and know what was really going on. The person I think might really like this book is my dad, because he used to box and he also likes to watch and read about boxing and he has knows how it feel to boxing and he can relate to this book very well.
