Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert
Reviewed by Halleigh, age 13

The Contender by Robert Lipsyte The contender is a book about this boy named Alfred brooks. He has a friend named James they both dropped out of school. Alfred lives in what you can call the ghetto. James started hanging out with the wrong people and one day James and his new friends decided they wanted to break in the store Alfred worked at. Alfred forgot they had put burglary alarm in and James got caught. So James new friends decided that they would stop by Alfred’s house so they got into a big fight. That same night Alfred went to the gym because he wanted to become a boxer. He had walked in and he saw a short guy named Mr. Donatelli Well Alfred made a few new friends Jelly, Spoon, and Henry. Alfred had his first 2 fights and drew one and lost one. Then one day Mr. Donatelli said to Alfred this could be your last fight you need to retire so Alfred showed Mr. Donatelli on his last fight he fought this big guy who knocked out this guy in 1 minute. Alfred didn’t win but he stayed in the ring for along time Mr. Donatelli was really proud of him. When he got home is aunt said the cops came to his house and he said why because they are looking for James he broke into the store Alfred works at and the way out he broke threw the window and cut his self really bad but before she could say his name he took off running to the park under this rock Alfred And James use to hang out at and he went under it there was James he was under there bleeding really bad. At the end is the best part because James and Alfred became friends again. My favorite saying from the book is when Alfred is at his last fight and he says he was punching him it felt like iron poles hitting him in the stomach. The story takes place in Harlem new York. I think the book is very interesting it is scary, and funny. If you like books that are funny and scary but that is very interesting you would like this book.
