Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert
Reviewed by Jeanette, age 13

The Contender There is a boy named Alfred and he is 16 yrs old. He lives in a bad neighborhood. He has a best friend named James. He started hanging around with the wrong people. One day James and his friends tried to brake in the store Alfred works at. Then they caught James and he went to jail. Then one day Alfred went to the gym and he wanted to be a boxer. He won his two fights and he has become a contender. He lost his fight but he showed Mr.Donatelli that he could do it. Then when he got home his aunt said that the police had come by because of James so he ran out and his aunt was about to say something to him but he was already gone. He had gone to the park to find James because every time they would get into trouble they would go to the park. My favorite quote was “Hubbard him like iron pipes”. It is related because at the end of the book Alfred was fighting and he got hit and that’s how it felt like. Alfred is the main character. He dropped out of school and he has a job at a store. He has a best friend and his name is James. The story takes place in two places. The first one is at his ghetto neighborhood and the second one is at the gym. The author made it interesting at the end because James and Alfred became friends. The conflict was when Major and James broke into the store that Alfred works at. Alfred forgot to the alarm and Major beat him up. That’s why he wanted boxing lesson. I thought it was sad, interesting, and happy. Someone who would like this book would be amazed. Well if they liked to box then they would know how to bow better.
