Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Alex, age 13 The Contendor There was a male teen by the name of Alfred Brooks he wanted to be the best at what he did. He wanted to be a contendor. He worked hard at what he did. He had a lot of heart. He lived in a bad environment in Harlem, New York. The story took place in the 1960’s. He worked in a small grocery store. Mr. Donatelli was Alfred’s trainer. Mr. Donatelli was a pretty good trainer because he trained three champions. Alfred’s Aunt Pearl wanted Alfred to stop boxing because she didn’t want him to get hurt. The conflict of the story is when Alfred started boxing because it caused a lot of problems. The theme of the story is to never give up. I like how the author told what type of punches were being threw. I also liked how he used sounds when punches were being landed. He showed in the book how to not give up in whatever you want to. The way I feel about the book is that it is a good book. It can teach you a lot of things in life. I learn a bunch of thing from this book. I recommend this book to teens. I think Jamiel Neal would like this book because he likes boxing.
