Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert
Reviewed by Junior , age 15

The Contender by Robert Lipsyte This book is an awesome book because it involves boxing something that a like. Well this book starts off as talking about a lazy Teenage boy about sixteen to seventeen years old. His name is Alfred Brooks and he finds out one day that he wants to become a boxer. Then after some training at the gym Mrs. Donatelli tells him he’s ready for his first fight. He wins his fights, about three them, then Mrs. Donatelli see a change in his boxing. He tells him its time to quit because of his way of getting beat up an not fighting back. He tells him if he can have his last fight so he can see if he still has it in him. He gets beat up but he knows that he still has it in him. He learns a lesson about how to be responsible and not to be lazy anymore. The quote I like is the one that Mrs. Donatelli tells him about being a contender. “About being a......a contender”. It means that he learn to work hard and concentrate to climb to be more mature. It’s like losing a fight to someone and inside of you it tells you that you still want it. Alfred Brooks = teenage boy who tries out boxing. Mrs. Donatelli = manager of Alfred Brooks. James = A friend of Alfred but his a drug addict. Henry = Alfred corner person in the ring. Local house hold neighborhood, a little junkie but not a lot. He made good decision about when he was with his bad friends. Gave six dollars to James when he needed more dope. Help James go to the hospital when he was hurt. His friends the Epistens didn’t trust him after some of his tried to break in their store. James was in with some bad people like drug dealers. I think that Alfred was going to quit when he hurt his ankle. I think that he was a brave little soldier. Mrs. Donatelli because he gave Alfred good advice about boxing
