Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Vanessa, age 15 The contender There’s a kid name Alfred who is about 16 yrs old he’s African American has a best friend named James. Alfred has a job at a grocery store he dropped out of school so did James. James gets influenced into doing bad thing he hangs out with Major now. Major is a big guy Alfred is scared of him. Major wants Alfred and James to go with him to break in where Alfred works but Alfred says no so only James went with Major. James gets caught and goes to jail Major runs away so he doesn’t get caught. James gets mad with Alfred because Alfred didn’t tell nothing about the alarm. Alfred has another friend named Henry. Henry works with Mr. donatelli in a boxing gym Henry tells Alfred he should go and work out. Alfred went and there was alot of guys he got kind of scared he starts working out and he kind of likes it Mr. donatelli wants Alfred to fight. Alfred won the first two fights the third one he drew the last one he lost Hubard hit him like iron pipes that means really hard. When Alfred gets home from his last fight his aunt tells him that James is in big trouble that the police is looking for him he thinks he knows where he is he went to the park and found him he was cut.
