Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Zack, age 14 The Contender by Robert Lipsyte The Contender The contender is a great book to read, it’s about a teenager that wants to be came a champion in boxing and he goes to Donatelli and asked him if he could train him and he does. Then he fights his first match and looses. After that he quits because he doesn’t think he could be a champion. Then he realizes that that’s all he wants to do so he goes back to Donatelli and tells him he wants a second chance. Donatelli gives him a second chance. A good quote from the book is when Alfred was helping James because he said he doesn’t have enough blood because he got cut and was bleeding to death. Then Alfred said “He had enough blood for him.” The main character of this story is Alfred. He is six-teen years old and wants to become a champion in boxing. The story took place in 1960’s in Harlem New York in a bad part of town. The thing I like about Robert Lipsyte is that he gives really good details in this story like when Alfred got punched in the stomach he said “His fist was like an iron bar being jabbed in his stomach.” My feelings toward this story were excitement. I would suggest my step-dad to read this book because it’s a great book and it has really good details in it.
