The Contender
Alfred Brooks is a high school drop out. He’s about 15 or 16. He has a job at a grocery store, and it’s going no where. Alfred has always been a quit kid. He had to move in with his aunt when his mom died. His best friend James has started hanging out with the wrong crowd. He is starting to do drugs, and he’s trying to bring Alfred down with him.
Major and his friends call him Old Uncle Alfred. The say that he’s nothing but a slave, because he works for the Epstein’s. Alfred slipped up and told Major and James that the Epstein’s have a lot of money in the cash register. Major James and Hollis were thinking about stealing the money. They tried to get Alfred to go with them, but he refused to go. As Alfred was walking down the rode, he remembered that the Epstein’s put a new alarm in the store. He ran as fast as he could to get to the store to tell them. He was too late. The police caught one of them, they caught James.
When he got home Major and Hollis were waiting for him. They beat him up. The next morning he woke up and his aunt was standing over him. She asked him what happened. He told her that he fell off a fence, but she didn’t believe him. That night he was walking down the rode when he found him self in front of a gym, He went in. It was dark and there was a chair in the middle of the room. There was a little old man setting in the chair. Alfred told him that he wanted to be someone, a champion. Donatelli told him that he couldn’t be a champion until he is a contender. He told him what to do to start off, and told him to come by the gym the next day.
He came back and started training, he got better and better. Finally he was ready, he had his first fight. He won it by decision. He kept training, he had his second fight, he won it too. He had his third fight, they had a draw. Donatelli told him that is was time for him to retire. But he had just one more fight. He lost, be Donatelli then found out that he was finally a contender. At the end of the book, he found James in the rocks in the park. He cut his arm on the glass window. He lost a lot of blood, Alfred had to carry him all the way to the hospital. He told James not to worry, that he had enough blood for the both of them.
