Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Jesus, age 14 The book I have been reading is called The Contender. This book is about an African American boy. He is living in the ghetto and has an opportunity at being a boxer. This guy named Alfred is sixteen he has troubles getting to the right place. He almost gets involved with drugs. One of my favorite quotes that they used in this book was when they said, “An iron pipe rammed into the pit of his stomach turning his legs into rubber.” That quote explained how hard his punches felt every time he punched Alfred.
