Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert
Reviewed by Priscilla, age 13

The Contender by Robert Lipsyte This book is about a young boy named Alfred Brooks. He lives in New York. His mom died when he was a really little boy. Alfred has this really good friend that they are like brothers his name is James. James and Alfred are always together until they meet some other guys that get them into trouble. When Alfred tells James, “Don’t worry about that, James, I got plenty of blood for you.” I thought it was very meaningful because it meant that Alfred will love James no matter what and will always be there for him. James is not really shower of how much he loves Alfred. James was influenced badly by other guys when it showed that it didn’t matter how long him and Alfred had been together he was more into other things. Aunt Pearl is Alfred’s aunt. She works very hard and is a woman with a lot of courage. The story takes place most of the time at their neighborhood and also at the gym. This story was about the time were people were still against African Americans were free, but couldn’t do many things. I really liked that the author has very good similes, and realistic details. I especially liked this book a lot because it showed me that am not the only person that has a hard life. I think people that like stories about always trying and never giving up would like this book because people that believe in this actually are interested but people that are not believers of this wouldn’t really be interested.
