Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert
Reviewed by Cristal, age 14

The Contender by Robert Lipsyte The Contender is a book about a black young man by the name of Alfred Brooks. He is like an orphan because he doesn’t have a mom or a dad. He doesn’t have much of an education because he’s a high school drop-out. Now he’s sixteen and works for the Epsteins in a little store. He doesn’t do much so he wants to be someone. ‘’I know you are. You never been excited about anything in your life till today. But I wish it was something else.’’ This quote explains that Alfred hasn’t been excited of doing anything in his life before. He’s excited because he saw how they boxed and he wanted to do it too. Alfred is sixteen, skinny, black, not that confident of himself, and he’s scared. He lives in Harlem, New York in a dirty place, in the summer. The author used parallel episodes a lot those give you an idea of what things could be like if they went the same. Alfred is scared of major but he gains confidence of himself and stops being scared. I felt bad because Alfred has to go thru a lot of things and I can relate to loosing a parent. I would want people who are addicted to drugs to read it so they can see how James ends up and understand they have a problem. I would also like for people who feel low to read it and understand everybody’s a somebody.
