Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by rodrick, age 14 the contender robert lipsyte One reason I like this book is because the quotes the author uses in the book. My favorite quote is when he said Mr. Donatelli told Alfred when he become a contender they both will know when it happens. I also like this book, because of what it is about. This story is about a sixteen year old boy .He works in a grocery store for an old man. In this story the sixteen year old boy (Alfred) tries to overcome hi s problems by getting into boxing. The main character in this book is Alfred cause it tells more about him than any one else in the book. This story takes place in Harlem, New York in 1960’s. Another thing I like about this book is how the author in this book makes different kinds of similes he used in the book. I think the conflict of the story is when Alfred smoked and drink beer and he broke his training for boxing after Henry told him not to go because he knew he would brake training, but he went anyway and he broke his training. This story kind of had a bad feeling on my prospective. Cause of what happened to James how he got caught by the police. He got on drugs really bad. He got his arm cut when he was running from the police. I know this person who can relate to this book real well by the way James lived and how he was on drugs.
