Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert
Reviewed by jacquez, age 14

The Contender by Robert Lipsyte I think that kids should read this book because, it teaches respect an to never give up when things get tuff. In this story a boy named Alfred is living a regular life, he works for a drug store, and he lives his ant who keeps all of them in a two bedroom house with his cousins. It’s not a fancy place or anything it is really not clean. There are junkies on street corners, trash on the ground and very big people. He likes boxing so he go to this gym talks to an old man tales him what to do and when to do every thing to. Know it is a month later and he is fighting in a match with a man. Mr. donateli told Alfred ‘you will know when you are a contender when you get hurt’. The main character in the story as you know is Alfred he is African American who lives in Harlem with his kin. Ant pearl is the one who takes care of all them. James was Alfred’s best friend until James got hooked on drugs and he is also African American. Finally there is major he is the most known person in the group that steals. I like this story because it takes place in a poor black community and no one really cares just looking for advancement. The author made me wonder about what would happen next in the book. I thought it was not good for Alfred’s family to be kind of poor in the story. I think teens would like this book because it teaches you to never quit before you try.
