Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Anaise, age 14 The Contender by Robert Lipsyte This book is about a sixteen year old boy, his name is Alfred Brooks. He lives in Harlem, New York. His mother died when he was very young, now he lives with his Aunt Pearl and his three cousins. His best friend James, who’s like his brother is going down the wrong road and it seems like Alfred wants to come along. At the rate he’s going there’s no future for him. Alfred and James are having problem with Major’s gang like posy because Alfred forgot about the silent alarm at the Epstein’s store, so Major and James went to go rob it but they got caught because of the silent alarm. Then James goes to jail and when he comes out he gets hooked on drugs. Alfred has his own problem trying to be a contender. “Don’t worry about that James; I got plenty of blood for the both of us.” Is a quote that really got my attention. What I think it means is that they love each other like brothers that Alfred is willing to do whatever it takes for James to get back on track. Alfred is a sixteen year old African- American boy, a caring person, and an over achiever. This story takes place in Harlem, New York around the 60’s. What is really amusing about the author is that he puts al these flashbacks together in one paragraph. What really changes about the main character is his behavior through the book.
