Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Ashley, age 13 The book The Contender is about a boy who wants to be a boxer and learn to fight. In the book Alfred is bullied and he wants to be able to fight back so he takes the first step to become a boxer which is to find a coach and sign up. While he is training he starts to regret his decision but he keeps on training. “Remember what you said that night about being a…a contender? You weren’t just talking about boxing.” Alfred learned that Mr.Donatelli was not only talking about boxing but he was also referring to life. Alfred is a 16 year old black, teenager who at first he is scared of this other guy named Major. He is a boxer, a nice boy, hard working, and a good friend. The conflict is that Alfred is being beat up by this big, huge guy who hates him and Alfred is having a hard time becoming a contender. The story takes place in Harlem, New York. The author added flash backs, dreams, and a hopeful ending. I thought the book was good, and it really surprised me especially at the last fight he had. I think that anyone who likes to read a good book should read it. It tells that if you believe in yourself and others you and that person can do anything if you set your mind to it.
