Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Haley , age 13 The story The Contender by: Robert Lipsyte is a unique book because the author uses flashback so it constantly reminds you and refreshes your memory is being refreshed. The story takes place mainly in Harlem, New York. The book is about a boy around the age of sixteen named Alfred. He struggles to find out where he belongs in this world and how to become a contender. My favorite quote from this book is when he and Mr. Donatelli are talking about him being a contender and he says “when you were talking about being a contender you weren’t just talking about boxing”. I think that this means you have to try hard to get somewhere in this world. He has a lot of conflicts in this story. I think the main conflict is his last fight. There are a lot of characters in this book well you have James who wants to be a contender. Major who is a bully and his gang and you have his best friend James who becomes a drug addict. Another conflict that I enjoy is when Hollis, Major and James break into the store that Alfred works. I feel that this book has many exciting and depressing moments. People who like people’s struggles and mystery will like this book.
