Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Daniel , age 14 The Contender by Robert Lipsyte The Contender is about a boy who wants to be a boxer. Before he dicited to become a boxer he works at a store, and his friends wanted money so he told them that the cash restrictor. They go and rob the store. His best friend gets caught and then he wants to become a boxer. After that he has been though a lot of changes, tempted with drugs, and almost quit. But in the very end he will find out if he’s a contender or not. Alfred is a seventeen year old drop-out and is trying to make something out of him. He lives in New York in the town of Harlem during the 1960’s. The author was very good at making the reader want to read more. He used a lot of flashbacks, metaphors, and similes. Another way he amazed me is how he made the characters act. A quote that stood out to me would be “If you want to be a Contender you can’t give up.” because it is very true not only for boxing but for real life. I would recommend this book to someone who wants to be something and wants to work at it.
