Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Gabriel, age 14 The Contender By Robert Lipsyte The Contender was a good book. It was about Alfred a black kid struggling to survive in the ghetto. He has a friend James that gets caught in the wrong crowd and becomes a druggy! This quote is my favorite “Remember what you said that night… about being a … a contender?” “You weren’t just talking about boxing” it means don’t quit life because some one knocks you down. One of the struggles Alfred went threw. Alfred, a 16 year old black boy that lives in the ghetto. He is also very interested in boxing. The book took place in Harlem, New York in the 1980s. I think the author was very interesting because he used a lot of idioms making the story very interesting. The contender was filled with themes but I think the best one was, don’t quit and keep going, and reach your goals! This book was a very strait forward massage to my life. It made me think of what I do. It made me feel confident to keep going no matter if you keep getting knocked down. I think everybody can get interested in this book because it has a little bit of everything like action and drama.
