Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by juan, age 14 THE CONTENDER ROBERT LIPYSTE This is the story of how a 17 year old black boy turns his life around by becoming a contender. From fighting Mayor, his childhood bully to fighting Hubard a 23 year old marine, the contender is action packed. But in end the contender has to save his childhood friend James. A good quote is “You have to start by wanting be a contender, the man who knows there’s a good chance he’ll never get to the top, the man who’s willing to sweat and bleed to get up as high as his legs and his brain and his heart and his will take him”. Alfred at first is a good for nothing junky that accidentally gets his best friend James in jail, when he gets out he is mad at James. This story takes place in the New York ghetto in the 1960’s where a lot of segregation. The author did a lot of parallel episodes and the story is fast paced.
