Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Carolina, age 14 The Contender By Robert Lipsyte It about a sixteen-year old boy named Alfred. Alfred is African American who lives in Harlem, New York around the 1960’s. He is not bulky. He works in Lou Epstein store because he quit school. He is a very confident, faithful, trustworthy guy. What happens is that Alfred accidentally says something he was not supposed to say. His best friends go to jail, get beaten up. He decides to be a boxer. Almost gives up because of an incident. Solve, stays in boxing. Wins two fights. Show he’s a contender in the last fight, which he loses. A good quote in my opinion is when Hubbard breaks loose and says “You tough baby.” Alfred could have left but, he decides to stick through knowing Huddard could whoop his butt. I like the parallel stories. They made the story a lot more interesting. You think he was in one place but he really was not. I like the story, it very interesting in it own way. Especially, with the parallel stories. It kind of surprises you in some scene. This book is good for people who are going through some tough thing in the sport they are in to have faith and to be a like contender.
