Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Chris, age 14 The Contender By Robert Lipsyte Remember what you said that night about being a contender……yes......you weren’t just talking about boxing. This book is about a black boy named Alfred who lives in the ghetto. He has a friend named James who used to go to the movies with him every night, but lately James has been hanging around with the wrong crowd. The crowd that James has been hanging around with wants to rob the Epstein’s store that Alfred works at and Alfred forgets about the silent alarm in the Epstein’s store so James gets arrested. Then the group that James has been hanging around with comes back and beats up Alfred because they think that Alfred knew about the silent alarm in the Epstein’s store. Then Alfred goes into boxing to be a contender and he trains every day and every day he worry’s about James then Major shows up at the gym and tells Alfred that they are having a party at the club then Alfred asks if James is going to be there. Alfred goes to the party and gets drunk and doped up then he thinks about quitting boxing, but he doesn’t quit boxing and gets into matches.
