Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Heather, age 14 The Contender by Robert Lipsyte This book is about a teenager named Alfred. His dream is to be a pro boxer. During the story, his family was kind of upset about it because boxing is a life or death sport. He works hard to be the contender he wants to be. One of my favorite quotes is “An iron pipe rammed into the pit of his stomach, turning his legs to rubber. This is a good quote because it’s meaning Hubbard’s arm punched Alfred’s stomach and it was to feel like an actual iron pipe went through him. Meaning it hurt badly. Major is a guy that dislikes Alfred and always wants to be mean to him. Alfred: Alfred is a teen that wants to become a contender and works hard for everything he does. This book took place year-round and also took place in Harlem, NY in the ghetto. The author did awesome flashbacks and the details on when the actual boxing took place. The conflict was when Major and Alfred were in the church and Major rushed through the door ready to fight during church service. The detailed phrases and words made me feel like I was actually in the book! Anybody that’s into wrestling and boxing would like this book because it tells in great description of what the sport contains.
