Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert
Reviewed by jake, age 14

The Contender by Robert Lipsyte Alfred is a young boy in the ghetto trying to stay positive and get away from bad influences so he takes up boxing. Alfred tries to stay away from negative people like his ex-friend Major. Alfred must prove to everyone and himself that he is a contender. This classic is a great story for people who like hope and grit in their books. A good quote for this book is when Mr. Donatelli is asked by Alfred if,” when you said being a contender you didn’t mean boxing did you?” This is a good quote because it shows his situation in his life, Trying to be positive…different than everyone around him. But most importantly Alfred must try to be a contender in his life. Alfred is the only main character in this novel. He is a quiet good hearted kid who lives in the gritty streets and takes up boxing. This book takes place in Harlem NY. The author was great with metaphors for example, “Two iron rods slammed into his stomach.” This is great vivid detail that many people enjoy. Alfred accidentally gets James arrested and Major thought he told on him. Also Alfred starts boxing and wants to be a contender but is doubted he has one last chance to prove he is a contender. This book strikes me as sad and exciting. Sad is like how James gets hooked on drugs and messes up his life. Exciting, like how Alfred boxes and goes through very suspenseful moments. I think anyone can get into this book because it is a great novel and very suspenseful. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
