Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert Reviewed by Samuel, age 0 “The Contender” Alfred brooks is teenage boy the age of sixteen. He lives in Harlem New York. He hangs out with some boys there names are major, Hollis, and James. Alfred and James have been friends since they where little and they grow up and they aren’t friends any more. James becomes a junkie and Alfred becomes a contender which is someone who tries really hard to accomplish their goals. Choose your friends wisely. Because if you don’t you will be with the wrong people and be blamed for something you didn’t do. Alfred is sixteen he thinks wisely and knows what’s right from wrong. This story takes place in 1960s in Harlem New York. He used a lot of similes and made me feel as if I were there. James gets caught robbing a store and james and hollis come to beat alfred for not warning them about the alarma. my feelings for this book was good i enjoyd it and i liked the end.
