Contender, The by Lipsyte, Robert
Reviewed by Elizabeth, age 0

“The Contender” The contender is a book about a black guy named Alfred. Alfred has a best friend named James. James hangs out with the wrong people and decides to break into a location called Epstein’s. Furtionally Alfred doesn’t go with them but he forgot to tell James about the new burglar alarm at Epstein’s. “Remember what you said that night about being a contender? You weren’t just talking about boxing.” I think this is a very good quote because Alfred now understands that being a contender isn’t just about boxing is about believing in your self and being brave .This has to do with the story because it talks about being a contender. Alfred is the main character in the story. He is the type of person that wants to be something in life and his also tired of people telling him what to do. Alfred doesn’t like people bossing him around and wants to have a goal in life. The story takes place in New York in the 1960’s. The author Mc Dougal Little gave good descriptions in this book. One of the good description was when Alfred was boxing against Elston Hubbard the way he was describing the fight in the way he described the punches. An example: “concrete gloves hammered into his stomach.” Another example: when James said “weak as a baby lost all that blood blood.” Alfred said “don’t worry about that, I got plenty of blood for you” which he ment that he has his back. The theme of the story is about Alfred trying to be a contender and trying to have goal in life. My feelings towards this book would be being proud of Alfred because he reached his goal.
